Top 5 Bakeries in the North Shore - According to a Baker

Top 5 places to get desserts in the North Shore

Have you ever heard the saying "the cobbler's children have no shoes”? It’s a Spanish proverb that means someone who is skilled at something is so busy helping others that they neglect their own needs. That’s kind of what happens to me, I’m always baking for others, but when it comes to my household I never bake cakes for myself. So when I’m craving sweets I have my go-to places to satisfy my appetite. I want to share with you my top 5 places, some well known, others might be hidden gems for you to try and enjoy!

Without further ado, in no particular order here they go:

Assorted macarons display - Caramel

1.      Caramel French Patisserie

This family-owned French pastry shop is located in Salem, MA. I loveeee their macarons and I literally eat a dozen in one sitting. They always have lots of flavors to choose from so be prepared to stand in front of the display case for a while trying to decide. They also sell other treats and baked goods, but I really take the drive there whenever I’m in the mood for a really well made meringue confection.

Nutella Babkas - Ivory Pot Bakery

2.      Ivory Pot Bakery

This bakery opened their doors 4 years ago at the old D’Amici’s building on Eastern Ave. in Lynn, MA. The owner is a French trained pastry chef with a West African background. My favorite item that I always get is the Nutella Babka. Pro tip – when you get home pop the babka in the microwave for a few seconds and you’ll be in heaven. This is a full bakery so try their other items as well.

3.      Santia’s Bakery Boston

Santia’s Bakery Boston counter

This Dominican bakery is located in the Boston neighborhood of Jamaica Plain and owned by my colleague Rusellys Pimentel. Out of ALL the cakes I’ve eaten in my whole professional life this is the one that comes really close to mine in flavor and texture. I love it! I always get cake slices like the black and white cake or dulce de leche. They also have a savory display case with pastelitos, quipes, etc. Is a must try and definitely worth the drive. Tell Ruselly I sent you.

4.      Goodnight Fatty

Goodnight Fatty drop

When it comes to late night indulgences and munchies galore, Goodnight Fatty in Salem, MA takes the cake…ahem cookie. I love their concept of “drops” where every weekend there is a new menu with different cookie flavors. You go to their website, place the order and they deliver the cookies right to your door in just a few minutes. Lynn deliveries are only done on Saturdays so you must plan accordingly.

5.      Baked by Lula

Basque cheesecake ready to get sliced

Now hear me out, I found this account on Instagram, it draw me in because the images where very enticing. You can only order by sending a DM and orders must be picked up in Cambridge, MA. This hidden gem is worth the drive! I love, love, love these cheesecakes.

This is an at-home-baker who only bakes Basque Burnt Cheesecakes. This niche is very narrow but this allows for, in my opinion, to perfect the craft. The cheesecakes have a thin, flaky “brunt” top, and then you cut into it and this creamy, velvety, luscious cheesecake comes out and you just can’t stop going in for another bite. There are many different seasonal flavors, but you can’t go wrong with the original. It’s my favorite and I know it will be yours too.

So there you have it. My top favorite desserts, the ones that I drive to the ends of the earth for, whenever I’m in the need for something sweet and tasty. I really hope you get out there and support all these amazing bakers. Let’s Go!
